Appointed by North Lanarkshire Council following competitive tender, this major wayfinding project, as part of the regeneration of Cumbernauld, was one we were passionate about and one where we felt our work could make a real difference. The regeneration and rebirth of a town centre like this should have a voice - a new, clear, confident voice - and a new wayfinding scheme was the ideal way of providing this.
The project scope included all key routes from outlying areas to the town centre, navigation of the centre itself and returning visitors safely and easily to their starting point. This scope was subsequently widened to include many different groups of users such as, cyclists, motorists and those using public transport.
An extensive audit and journey mapping process, followed by development of wayfinding strategy and, ultimately, design of the sign types to deliver the wayfinding messages resulted in a highly cohesive, harmonious scheme. This scope has now extended beyond wayfinding to include branding and environmental graphics.
