Galeão International Airport, Rio de Janeiro

With the expected increase in visitors arriving at Rio de Janeiro’s Galeão International Airport for the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014, there was a critical need to improve and add to the existing signage across both terminals of the international airport.

There was a lack of consistency and visual look to the existing signage, in some instances there was only a simple printed piece of paper stuck to the wall and in many other areas no signage at all.

MSD in joint partnership with ICON were commissioned in March 2014 by Odebrecht to analyze and identify gaps in current front of house signage and wayfinding information, arrival & departure flows, Terminal buildings, car parks and onward travel information.

Key aspect of the project was the short turnaround period of 4 weeks to quickly analyze and propose temporary solutions to improve passenger experience during the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014.

Key deliverables included:

  • Complete audit for existing front of house signage
  • Temporary signing strategy and master plans
  • Temporary sign content schedules
  • Dual language wayfinding analysis report
  • Kit of Parts design for temporary sign solutions
  • Graphic design proposals for temporary scheme
