South Tyneside Council

The driver behind this project was South Tyneside Council’s initiative to help ease the current economic downturn in the town centre area by providing a more pleasant streetscape. They wished to create an easier way for visitors to navigate the town centre, thus increasing footfall and boosting trade for local businesses.

MSD worked closely with council representatives designing wayfinding maps and orientation signage to help achieve those goals. The following disciplines were included in the design scope:

  • Study to determine appropriate scale of the new scheme
  • Consultation on DDA and legibility, particularly reading distances
  • Graphic and product design for signs
  • Design and development of wayfinding map
  • Construction design and specification

After the initial scheme has been evaluated the aim is to extend the wayfinding signage beyond the immediate town centre area and this need for expandability has been factored into the scheme design.
